Click It or Ticket.

From May 23 through June 5 the Stephenville Police Department will be out in force, participating in the "Click It or Ticket" enforcement mobilization.

There are still a lot of people in this jurisdiction who do not think they should buckle up.  We want these drivers and passengers to know that buckling up is the smart move that gets them on down the road.  We'll be writing tickets for the folks who just don't get it.  We'd rather write them a ticket than see people injured or dead in a crash down the road.

Stephenville Police Department is also participating in "Buckle Up in Your Truck" an educational campaign to convince pickup truck occupants in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and the Indian Nations to wear their seatbelts.  Well over a million pickup truck drivers and passengers in the five state region are still not buckling up, resulting in more than 1,000 pickup occupants dying every year in traffic crashes.

Pickup trucks in fatal crashes roll over twice as often as passenger cars.  Wearing your safety belt reduces the risk of dying in a rollover crash by up to 80 percent.  In 2003, 699 Texas pickup truck drivers and passengers died in traffic crashes, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash data.

NHTSA crash cost estimates indicate that if safety belt use in pickup trucks was raised to the same level as in other passenger vehicles in all of the South Central states, 132 lives would be saved and 3,032 injuries could be prevented resulting in an economic savings of $300 million dollars.
