GUARD AGAINST FRAUD
Avoid the lure of :

Mail Ploys

  • Refuse unordered, C.O.D. merchandise (merchandise you pay for upon delivery).
  • Never pay for a product you didn't order - even if it has already been sent to you.
  • Investigate offers (for real-estate, life insurance, charities, etc.) before buying.
  • Ignore chain letters.



Advertising Rackets

  • Contact the Better Business Bureau before dealing with companies advertising:
  • get -rich schemes
  • plans to start your own mail-order business
  • miracle cures



Phony Telephone Offers

  • "Con" artists may try to cheat you through:
  • false investment opportunities or phony real estate deals
  • junk jewel, fake artwork, etc.
  • Verify claims with the Better Business Bureau an d your state or local consumer protection office.
  • Never give your credit card or bank account over the phone unless you've placed the call with a reputable company.



Door-To-Door Swindlers

  • Most sales people who come to your door are reputable, but some are not. Ask to see a permit, if required where you live. Carefully check goods and services sold by door - to - door sales people, building contractors, etc. Compare offers with known companies and check references before signing a contract.
