Outdoor Burning |
To assist citizens in the removal of brush and leaves, the fire code permits these items to be burned under certain conditions. Open burning shall also be conducted as required by other governing agencies regulating emissions.
The fire code permits the burning of the following substances:
These substances must be piled or burned from within an approved burning appliance (see Section IV.B.2.a Burning of entire yards or fields is not permitted.
Unless otherwise approved, the materials to be burned must have been generated at the site at which the burning is to take place. That is, the materials may not be hauled in from other locations.
The fire code prohibits the burning of the following substances:
This section addresses outdoor burning in residential areas and most other areas of the city. See Section V for burning in remote, undeveloped areas.
2. No burning shall take place when the wind is, or is predicted to be less than 5 mph nor greater than 20 mph.
3. No burning shall take place when atmospheric conditions are, or are predicted to be such that the smoke will not readily rise and dissipate.
B. Location of burn site in relation to buildings.
1. Open burning shall not be conducted within 50 feet of any structure or other combustible material.
2. Conditions which could cause the fire to spread to within 50 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.
a) Not less than 15 feet when burning is conducted in an approved burning appliance. (A suggested design for an approved burning appliance would be an noncombustible enclosure such as a steel drum not larger than 55 gallons, covered with a noncombustible screen with openings not larger than 3/8 inch.)
C. Quantities
The maximum aggregate quantity that may be burned at any one site in residential, populated or other developed area shall be three cubic yards. The maximum quantity that may be burned at any one time shall be one cubic yard.
D. Fire extinguishing equipment
A garden hose connected to a water supply or other approved extinguishing equipment shall be readily available for use at open-burning sites.
E. Attendance
Burning material shall be constantly attended by a person knowledgeable in the use of the required fire-extinguishing equipment. The burning material shall be supervised until the fire has been extinguished.
We may require that open burning be immediately discontinued if it is determined that smoke emissions and/or odors are offensive to occupants of surrounding property or if the burning is determined to constitute a hazardous condition.
A. At the discretion of the fire chief or fire marshal, the foregoing regulations regarding the time of burning, location, quantities, fire-extinguishing equipment and attendance may be modified.
B. Remote, undeveloped areas include any property having sufficient size that open burning can be conducted at least 300 feet from any adjacent properties which have residential, recreational, commercial or industrial use.
A. Location
Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material unless contained in a barbecue pit. Conditions which could cause a fire to spread to within 25 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.
Buckets, shovels, garden hoses or a fire extinguisher with a minimum rating of 4-A shall be readily available for use at recreational fires.
Recreational fires shall be constantly attended by a person knowledgeable in the use of the required fire-extinguishing equipment. An attendant shall supervise a recreational fire until such fire has been extinguished.
We may require that recreational fires be immediately discontinued if such fires are determined to constitute a hazardous condition.
